Abstract
ABSTRACT

Introduction

Introduction: Nomadic herders, as one of the traditional communities dependent on natural resources, have faced serious drought challenges over the past two decades. This study aims to examine the perceptions of nomadic herders in Kalat-e Naderi regarding drought management during crisis conditions and the coexistence mechanisms employed in this context

Methodology

For this purpose, a qualitative research method was used along with in-depth interviews with 20 nomadic herders from Darbandi in Kalat-e Naderi County. Sampling was purposive and continued until theoretical saturation was reached to ensure a wide range of perspectives and experiences were collected. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis and thematic network methods, employing the cyclical model of crisis management. The research validation method was interpretive validity, and final confirmation was achieved by providing feedback on the research results to 7 experts.

Geographical area of research

The statistical population studied in this research consists of semi-nomadic tribes in the Darband area, a subdivision of the border county of Kalat-e Naderi in northeastern Khorasan Razavi Province.

Results and discussion

The findings indicate that the nomadic herders of Kalat Naderi employ a set of strategies to cope with drought crises, categorized into three groups: 1- Prevention and mitigation strategies; aimed at reducing vulnerability to drought by improving infrastructure (such as irrigation facilities), managing water and forage reserves, and implementing sustainable rangeland management and livestock grazing methods. 2- Reactive strategies; adopted in direct response to drought occurrence, including livestock management and the management of livestock nutrition and water. 3- Resilience-enhancing strategies; aimed at strengthening the nomads' ability to cope with drought-induced shocks and return to normal conditions after the crisis, focusing on diversifying income sources and benefiting from financial support from the government and relatives.

Conclusion

These results can serve as a basis for formulating better policies in the field of crisis management for nomadic herders facing drought.
